The Eighth Doctor and Charley (and C'rizz)

The Eighth Doctor and Charley

Now we’ve arrived at the party. In 2000, Big Finish was a little upstart side project, although one doing very nicely, having recruited Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy to the cause. But in landing Paul McGann, they had the “current” Doctor (even though the show was off the air), meaning they could claim to be providing the character’s ongoing adventures, especially since the revised series wasn’t even a prospect yet, and so could go on indefinitely. This phase slotted the Eighth Doctor into the Main Range with the other three, supplied a new companion in Charley Pollard, and really defined the Eighth Doctor’s romantic, somewhat manic persona. As the late wilderness years writers tended to do, they start to push the formula after a while with the Divergent Universe arc, and...well, real-world considerations changed where that ended up going. The Main Range stories in this era go pretty much in order, but in subsequent years, any “Eight and Charley” stories have to be dropped in here before “Neverland,” so there’s a whole bunch of inserts. After that point, though, it’s pretty much a straight shot.
