The Odds Against

Ravenous 3.4

We’re winding down to the end of this boxed set, and John Dorney presents a twisty mystery rather than a dramatic conflict. The TARDIS lands on an isolated moon that appears to be where the Time Lords imprisoned the Ravenous. There’s a monastery on top of a tear in reality that causes strange effects nearby. In fact, probability seems a bit out of whack here. There’s a dead body that the crew stumbles onto just in time to get apprehended. There’s mysterious creatures from other dimensions bleeding through and threatening the inhabitants. There’s a monster from legend that nobody believes is actually real, living under the monastery. In short, all the sorts of things that the Doctor and company would normally investigate. But there’s also an authority figure who doesn’t suspect them of any wrongdoing at all, takes them completely at their word, and is very supportive when they want to help. Is everything what it seems here? The twist is pretty good if you don’t see it coming, or even if you do, really, because there are enough clues to work it out. It leaves the characters in a fairly interesting place, not a cliffhanger, but not a firm resolution either. I think this is probably my favorite of the box-enders in this series.
