This story turns the writing duties over to Matt Fitton and tasks him with getting the main story rolling. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Helen or the Eleven, and it turns out it’s been a while for them too. After escaping the end of Doom Coalition, Helen now has the Sonomancer’s powers, which she used to dump the two of them into an insane asylum planetoid, making rather a mess as she did so. She hasn’t used her powers since, but they’re still around. The Eleven seems to be trying to reform, using the Eight’s mantras and Helen’s support. It’s a bit odd that Helen would stick around with the Eleven, but he seems to need her, and he’s the only link to her previous life with the Doctor. The major guest appearance in this story is the return of the Kandyman, last seen in “The Happiness Patrol.” Everybody behind the scenes seems enamored of the idea of returning this character, in a more menacing, humanoid form. Personally, I don’t see the appeal of a villain whose primary skill is “makes desserts,” but there it is. The tricky bit is there’s some narrative timey-wimey going on here, and not all the events are taking place simultaneously. You’ll want to listen carefully if it’s your first time. There’s also the very first mention of the Ravenous, but without enough information to tell you anything about them. But if you’ve been missing the Eleven or Helen, here you go.
