This is where it gets dark. This is also the point where all the plot threads of this season come together, although not entirely together; that’s for next time. Lucie and Alex have been touring the world, as promised, but they get stuck when a plague sweeps the planet. Possibly because this story was written in 2010, after seeing Rose, Martha, and Donna all put through the wringer on TV, Lucie comes out much the worse for wear. Of course this is the Daleks, re-invading Earth using almost the exact same plan from “The Dalek Invasion of Earth,” which Susan comments on. But originality was never their strong suit. The Monk is here as well, because he’s allied with the Daleks before, and doesn’t seem to have learned that you can’t trust the Daleks as your allies. The first part of the story is told partially narrated from Lucie’s point of view, as the world falls apart and things get progressively worse for her, Alex, and Susan, eventually taking Lucie past the point of having any faith in the Doctor. He does show up eventually, of course, but far too late to prevent slaughter. Tamsyn is around too, but still operating under the impression that the Monk is benevolent, because she has no clue how Daleks operate. And it ends with a pretty strong cliffhanger, not that anybody would believe it. Far from a fun story, but powerful.
