This Short Trip is read by Sheridan Smith, so Lucie gets a somewhat larger role. In particular, she’s in the 1970s, during the time of labor strikes and power cuts, undercover at a nursing home, many of whose residents lived through World War II. In particular, one of them has a secret from the war, both in how she served her country, and something that she found at the time. Perhaps because Alice Cavender specializes in creating vivid characters with unusual quirks, this one seems to be entirely an invention, not drawn from any historical figure. Because it’s a Short Trip, there isn’t a lot of chasing around or action, but that’s to the good, because the dialog sparkles in this story. Having Lucie’s lines read by Sheridan Smith enhances the whole thing.
