It’s Lucie’s birthday! Or a day she’s chosen to call her birthday anyway. So she wants to do something special, and ends up with...space roller-derby. For a short episode, there’s a lot of content here and several high concepts. There’s the horribly corrupt company keeping the populace under its thumb, which is standard, as are the low-level employees looking to rebel. The roller derby is a bit of a twist, though. The oppressed natives are also pretty standard, but having them be fans of old Earth movies is different, and generational differences on how to fight back is pretty unusual. There’s plenty of action, with scenes that would make excellent visuals if this were a TV episode. The unique aspects of the writing by Alice Cavender make this the story from this boxed set that stands out most to me.
