The cliffhanger of the previous story revealed that the baddies here are the Eight-Legs from “Planet of the Spiders,” but they really hate being called spiders. However, there’s dissension within the ranks, much worse than last time, and that eventually leads to their downfall. Sheridan Smith gets to spend about half the episode being evil, and another chunk engaging in mental combat, which reveals that she’s actually fairly tough. Her bond with the Doctor is still fairly strong, even though they spend much of the story apart. It’s also the end of the Headhunter’s and Karen’s arcs, perhaps ending a bit more flat than one might have expected, without any big revelations. On the whole, it’s good-not-great. The plot isn’t all that memorable, but the secondary characters are well drawn.
