We’re starting in a weird place: This is an anthology release with four short stories, featuring characters who mostly associated with the Eighth Doctor in print: Bernice Summerfield, Fitz Kreiner, Izzy...and then Mary Shelley, who’d become a companion later on. These adventures would have been separated by a fairly long period of time, but since we’re assuming all the comics and novels happen in this phase, it’s pretty much chronological, I guess? In “Benny’s Story,” it’s pretty clear that this is the first time she’s seen him since “The Dying Days,” and a lot has happened for her since then. As for what she’s up to, it’s a standard (for Benny) dodgy archaeological dig, where she’s not sure who’s signing the checks or what they’re up to. The Doctor turns up, there’s a time bubble and a bit of a paradox, but it’s all pretty standard really. Benny, as always, lays on the snark pretty thickly, and Lisa Bowerman sounds great doing it.
