This is the second half of the inaugural Fifth Doctor boxed set. The first story was set as early in this crew’s tenure as possible, and this one is deliberately set as late as possible, shortly before Adric’s departure. It’s also a John Dorney story, so you can expect some mental exercises, and he doesn’t disappoint. There’s a locked-room mystery, a creepy cult, lots of early-80s tech, and plenty of math, including a sentient imaginary number. As you can imagine, that gives a lot for Adric to do, but Nyssa and Tegan also get their turns to be helpful. The actors do an impressive job of conjuring the versions of their characters from late in season 19, especially since they recorded this shortly after doing the early versions. I’m glad the boxed set went over well, enough to get us more stories with Adric.
