After the Fifth Doctor box set proved popular, Adric appeared in a couple of Main Range trilogies, starting with this one in 2017. Andrew Smith often writes these Adric stories, as he created the character. This one is clearly intended to be a showcase for Adric, as he gets to be clever, heroic, and even has a love interest. As with many Andrew Smith stories, it’s pretty high-concept, with sentient pan-dimensional beings and humanity’s first trip to the Andromeda galaxy. As a showcase for Adric, it works fairly well.
