Building off of the last story, Marc is being cyber-converted, and even though the Cybermen don’t have a huge role in the story, the Doctor is suffering extreme levels of guilt over the memory of Adric. Peter Davison plays this all the way, with the Doctor seeming quite distraught over the thought of losing Marc. It makes for a powerful story. At the end of the story, the Doctor goes off on his own, consumed by guilt, leaving all three companions behind.
