When Big Finish got the rights to use elements from the modern series, one of the first things they did was create some stories with the Big Finish Doctors encountering monsters introduced in the new series, being careful to use only ones the modern Doctors had indicated they’d met before. Obviously, the Weeping Angels topped the list of monsters to use, and yet presented a serious challenge because they’re very visual monsters who don’t speak. This does lead to characters overtly describing what the angels are doing, and announcing when it’s light or dark, rather unlike the Angels’ TV appearances, but it’s not too intrusive. Joel and Gabby make good temporary companions (and it’s always great to hear Sacha Dhawan), in the tradition of Sally Sparrow, and there’s a bonus appearance of Michelangelo, acting grumpy and pompous, rather like Rembrandt from a few stories ago. There’s a fair bit of timey-wimey, which you’d expect in a story with the Angels, even though the Doctor doesn’t actually say the phrase. So far, Big Finish has only used the Angels sparingly, but this is a decent start.
