Like “Prisoners of Fate,” this one is intended to be a dark, sad story, but it doesn’t pull it off quite as well. There’s a sense of desperation to a universe succumbing to entropy, and people who’ll do anything to find a way out. The pirates, unfortunately, are a bit too stereotypically pirate-y, which takes one out of the story. Nyssa’s departure had been kind of a certainty throughout this trilogy, but I can’t help thinking it would have been more effective if this one hadn’t happened. Nothing is ever certain with Big Finish, but this does seem like the end of Nyssa’s story, not that it’ll prevent Sarah Sutton from making Nyssa stories set prior to this point (as she continues to do).
