Another early story, this is a bit of an improvement on “Phantasmagoria,” but not a huge one. Turlough and the Doctor still don’t seem quite at ease together, and Turlough complains even more than usual about the goings-on. To be fair, he’s probably justified this time, as he keeps getting victimized in this story. Whenever Doctor Who brushes up against mysticism, it doesn’t quite gel, unless the “magic” turns out to be science in disguise, which it doesn’t this time. The character of Rosa has the usual problem of actors doing American accents not quite convincingly, and the story isn’t sure if she’s heroic or just a bit disturbed. Eleanor Bron is in it, but she’s using an accent, so you’d probably never know unless you read the credits. The story could only work on audio, as the villain does a number of things that defy physics, and are impossible to visualize.
