These stories actually take place before the start of the TV series, because Big Finish will tell stories in any gap they can. With Carole Ann Ford willing to participate, there’s a fair amount of opportunity for narrated stories. However, the Doctor as we first see him in “Unearthly Child” doesn’t have the empathy he’ll develop later, which makes storytelling with him a challenge. He definitely cares for his granddaughter, though, which is what these stories usually hang on.
