The TARDIS finally makes it back to 1963, specifically London on November 23, 1963, but everything is frozen in time, except for the travelers. Ian and Barbara explore the city while the Doctor and Vicki work on the problem in the TARDIS. That gives Ian and Barbara time to reflect on the chaos of the world at that time -- Kennedy’s assassination, the Cold War, and the difficulties faced by homosexuals in that era. In the end, it’s the TARDIS that’s at fault, not the world, and the only thing the travelers can do is leave again.
