Companion Chronicles #8.9
Released: 13 March 2014
Listened: 1/25/20
This is the first chronological appearance of Vicki in this project (welcome!), but far from Maureen O’Brien’s first Big Finish. The Companion Chronicles series had generally moved on from the format of “older companion telling someone a story of what happened when they were younger,” and instead this story takes place in Vicki’s “present,” with someone else telling Vicki a story of her immediate future, in the hope of changing it. The writing, by Jac Rayner, is pretty clever here, with things seeming to be continuity errors that turn out to be otherwise. The other character in this story is played by Jacqueline King, who played Donna’s mum Sylvia in the TV series, and has done a ton of Big Finish work, and I never would have realized if not for the extras. As for the story itself, it’s slight, given that the flash-forward and the frame story are given about equal time, but pretty good, with some high concept ideas.
