Companion Chronicles Special
Released: 31 May 2012
Listened: 1/17/23
There’s only one story in this gap between Susan leaving and Vicki joining, this Companion Chronicle special. It’s on the long side for a Companion Chronicle, clocking in at a bit over an hour. I have no clue what makes this story warrant a special, but here it is. As often happens, Ian and Barbara get separated from the Doctor early on, but in this case, it’s the TARDIS that leaves, which in this era, means they’ll likely never see him again. So they’re stuck on Orkney, but fortunately, quite close to their own time. And, of course, there’s something weird going on, connected to the ancient legends of Orkney, because of course it is. William Russell continues to sound good as both Ian and the Doctor, but like many Chronicles, this one uses the conceit of Ian telling the story much later in life. The story itself is actually fairly small-scale, without a whole lot of actual peril, but the cliffhanger at the end of Part 1 and the twist at the end of Part 2 are quite well executed.
