A bit further down the chronology now, this Companion Chronicle’s frame story takes place after Ian and Barbara have returned home, and seem to be in a lot of trouble with spy agencies because of their disappearance, which is realistic, but more of a new-series idea. So Ian decides to tell a story of some random visit to a planet where the citizens all engage in shared dreaming. Except not everything is what it seems, and it wraps up rather nicely. The character work here is particularly strong, capturing not just the essence of the characters, but how Ian sees them as well. It especially highlights Vicki’s more impulsive nature, compared to Susan.
