Return of the Rocket Men

Companion Chronicles #7.5
Released: 10 November 2012
Listened: 3/2/20
This is a sequel to “The Rocket Men” from earlier in this chronology, and where that one was definitely an Ian story, this one is decidedly a Steven story. It’s written by Matt Fitton instead of John Dorney, and although Fitton tries to mimic some of the structure of Dorney’s story, it doesn’t quite come off. What does come off well is making the Rocket Men seem like a serious and credible threat, which works well with the 60s atmosphere. I don’t think they’re as dangerous in their subsequent appearances. It’s also a good showcase for Steven, operating within his own native era, so he’s the most knowledgeable character for once, and he gets to use his piloting skills, something that never happened on TV. It’s not quite as good as the original, but it’s a strong sequel.
