The Doctor and Steven end up at an archaeological dig in the early 1900s, at the site of Eridu. Unusually for a First Doctor story, it’s not just random; the TARDIS is responding to time distortions. It’s a pretty standard “immensely powerful alien is imprisoned at an ancient site” story, without a lot of twists to it.
