Companion Chronicles #3.5

This story is the first part of the trilogy, and therefore the first appearance of Jean Marsh as Sara since 1967, so it’s worth listening to the interviews. This time, the frame story and the flashback are both part of the same story, so listening to this one first sets up the other two properly. It’s creepy and atmospheric, and like a lot of such stories, especially early Companion Chronicles, which are narrated, there’s more telling than showing. In this case, that works to the story’s advantage, as it puts the focus on Sara and what she’s thinking about her situation, both in this story and with the Doctor in general. Also, the ending is ambiguous, which works better if you haven’t heard the subsequent stories. Because the frame story and the flashback mesh so well, this story is more coherent than the other two, and makes this the best of the three, in my opinion.
