It’s pretty rare, but every once in a while Big Finish comes up with a story that only really makes sense if you’re English. In this case, it also helps to have a knowledge of the English university system, particularly Cambridge, the works of Lewis Caroll, who Kim Philby and Guy Burgess were, and a smattering of quantum theory as well. As I only have some of that background knowledge, the story didn’t work for me as well as it could have. I’m also not sure why writers Robert Khan and Tom Salinsky chose to fictionalize Trinity College into Sedgwick College, but leave virtually all the other historical names intact. Maybe it’s tradition? Anyway, the TARDIS lands in Cambridge in the 1930s, and it eventually becomes clear that Something Is Off. But it takes a while to get to that point, because it’s a university, so how can you really tell if a student or professor is acting strangely? And Stephen and Vicki really lack the context for this particular situation. These writers have a tendency to show off their cleverness in stories that don’t take themselves entirely seriously. It’s an acquired taste, and not always successful.
