The Destroyers

Lost Stories #2.2
Released: December 2010
Listened: 2/12/20
This is a prequel of sorts to “Mission to the Unknown” (itself a prequel) which doesn’t feature the Doctor, any companions, or the TARDIS. It does, however, feature Sara Kingdom, and was intended as a pilot for Terry Nation’s proposed Dalek spin-off series, which never happened. It even has its own 60s-style theme music, which wouldn’t be out of place as an unused track from The Incredibles. Sara seems decidedly younger and less tough than in her later appearances, but she spends much of the story worried about her brother David, who never appears again, so we don’t know what happened to him. It also introduces android Mark Seven, who was intended to be a major character if the series took off, and turns up again much later in the Tenth Doctor “Dalek Universe” stories. Like many Dalek-focused stories, the Daleks are an implacable force, and everybody else is just trying to survive. From that perspective, it has a fairly unsatisfying ending, but given that it’s a pilot to a series that never happened, that’s probably expected.
