This is another Companion Chronicle where both Peter Purves and Maureen O’Brien work together, without any other actors, but this time O’Brien plays the Doctor, and it has to be said, not as well as Purves’ version, but that’s not overly surprising. It’s also a very twisty, brain-hurting story that almost seems to take place in an alternate reality. This one probably would have worked quite well on television, with limited sets and cast, but the story is so bizarre that I wonder if they would have dared such a thing in the 1960s. I hesitate to say more about it for fear of spoilers, but the characterizations of the TARDIS team are quite well-written, especially the First Doctor.
