This story was released just a few months after the previous one, and there’s definite connections. It starts out seeming like yet another historical, and it acknowledges several stories that have come before, specifically the fact that the travelers met Alexander the Great and Ptolemy. However, that all quickly gets turned on its head with an alien invasion, giving this story a much more modern-series feel. The Ian/Barbara relationship that was gently hinted at in the previous story is much more obvious here, which seems a bit out of place with the TV stories, but a reasonable development within the audio timeline. The Doctor also has a more modern-series attitude as well, striding up to the alien monsters and demanding that they listen to him. It’s probably not a particularly accurate early-era story, but within this project, it makes a nice palette-cleanser.
