For the first time, I’m not certain why Craig Brawley placed this story at this point. It’s a Companion Chronicle told by a much older Ian, or maybe an alternate Ian, from near the end of his life. Normally Companion Chronicles flash back to a single story that can be placed, but this story features bits and pieces from throughout Ian’s time as a traveler, brought up in random order. The plot isn’t too involved, as most of the enjoyment of the story comes from Ian’s memories, and you’ll probably see the twist coming. But if you’re looking for an explanation, you’ll find part of one after the closing credits.
