A new season starts here, with some twists on the formula. This story is a reference to “Robots of Death” without being a direct sequel, because it takes place a considerable time later, when the political situation has changed and robots are no longer trusted. K-9 doesn’t appear, perhaps because he could have shortcut parts of the story. The Doctor has always been particularly sympathetic toward Kaldor robots, and that’s still true here. Andrew Smith is pretty good at stories where the antagonist isn’t what you think they are, and that’s in here too. Leela doesn’t get quite as much to do, but it’s clear that she’s growing in experience, handling robots and spaceships with ease.
