This is an awfully long short trip, a full story and then some. In fact, it’s an alternate timeline in which the Doctor and Romana sacrifice themselves, and Adric ends up living a whole life, which he doesn’t get to do in the main timeline. It takes a while for the horror to dawn that Adric really is stranded alone forever, and there’s a gut-punch at the end with “I’ll never know if I was right.” Matthew Waterhouse narrates in-character as a much older Adric, and it really works. He doesn’t pull any punches about what he was like as a kid. This is one time when the extended short trip is justified.
