This is really a Tenth Doctor story, but it’s a crossover, and for the Fourth Doctor, it definitively takes place here. He’s taking a break after the events of the past few stories, and has gone to a cathedral outside of space and time to have a rest and paint some frescos. And apparently talk about himself a lot. When the Tenth Doctor turns up in the midst of his own identity crisis near the end of his regeneration, there’s some abrasion, but also mutual appreciation, as in the best multi-Doctor stories. When the Fourth Doctor calls out the Tenth on his arrogance, the Tenth Doctor – accurately – replies that it’s rich for the Fourth to call anybody arrogant. And yet, the Tenth Doctor really deserves the criticism at this point in his life. Oh, and there’s Daleks too, but that really just gives the Doctors something else to argue about. Matt Fitton excels at the interpersonal dynamics, and he really nails this one.
