Short Trips #10.2

This story seems to be set after Victoria’s departure, but before Zoe arrives. Unfortunately, there’s no gap there, so setting it here is perhaps the next best option. The Doctor and Jamie end up in Paris, in the early days of film, and run into Simone Tessier, an aspiring director. In typical artiste fashion, she’s got a vision for a film, but not really the money to make it, so she surrounds herself with various other artistic types, and folds Jamie into the mix, eventually falling for him. Unusually for a Short Trip, there’s a frame story, involving one of Simone’s descendants, and her research into her ancestor’s famous lost film, which features a cameo appearance by an entirely different Doctor and companion. The whole story has a bit of a gauzy feel to it, which is appropriate, given the setting. It’s also nice to let Jamie have an actual romance, as he never seems to have time for that in other stories. We’re back to Frazer Hines doing the narration and playing the Doctor and Jamie, all of which makes it feel rather more substantial than most Short Trips.
