Companion Chronicles #7.11

This chronicle is fairly high-concept, with timeslips, worlds that exist when you believe in them, and transforming robo-death-birds. There’s no bad guy or monster, unless you count human stupidity, which is always the bad guy, isn’t it? The Doctor uses the Sonic Screwdriver more than usual for the Second Doctor, but writer Eddie Robson is careful only to have him use it to disassemble things, not as a universal hacking device, which is appropriate for the period. Both Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury appear in this one, but unusually, the load is distinctly unequal. Frazer plays both Jamie and the Doctor, and has the bulk of the narration, whereas Zoe is sidelined for much of the story. This is a rare Companion Chronicle where I wonder what could have been done with a longer story, perhaps with a proper villain, but the setting is memorable as it is.
