After two stories that connected deeply with the histories of the Doctor and his companions, this one...doesn’t do that, at all. It’s a thinly-veiled Lovecraft pastiche, even down to including a character named “C.P. Doveday,” a writer of horror stories now confined to a sanitarium in Alaska. (You’d think the Doctor might recall meeting the real deal in “The Lovecraft Invasion”, but that hadn’t been written yet, so I guess not.) Ace and Hex seem pretty well recovered from the trauma of the last couple of stories. Hex seems relatively chill about being held captive by the bad guys and forced to operate on his own for a while, while Ace is still in her commanding, military persona, but also has a good deal of empathy for Doveday. This third story ends up not being a great fit with the trilogy it’s part of, and not really a very memorable story, either.
