This famous, or possibly infamous, novel serves a number of roles. It’s the final appearance of the Seventh Doctor in the Virgin New Adventures line, as it apparently leads into the TV movie (but not according to Big Finish). Virgin would lose the license to BBC Books almost immediately, so the Eighth Doctor’s novelized stories are over there. But mostly it’s the culmination of the “Cartmel Masterplan,” which reveals an awful lot about the history of Gallifrey and the Doctor’s role in it, much of which has subsequently been ignored, especially by the modern series. But that gets us out of the tricky novel continuity, and back into Big Finish.
