The Doctor and Mel visit another one of the Doctor’s old friends, a 19th Century parson with an interest in paleontology. While there, they find the footprints of the title, and the Doctor tries to investigate. However, the Doctor still seems somewhat distractible and vague, to Mel’s frustration, so she ends up investigating on her own. Several of these stories give the impression that Mel doesn’t really click with the Seventh Doctor very well, as she’s more forthright and direct. Maybe that’s why she doesn’t stick around much longer. (There's no connection to "The Devil's Hoofprints," but this story was released first.)
