This Short Trip, originally published as a prose story, gives Cavan Scott and Mark Wright the chance to write the final story for Nimrod, a character they created. Big Finish gradually abandoned the idea of the Forge, possibly because it had some redundancies with Torchwood’s remit of stealing alien tech. This story is basically the Seventh Doctor wanting to clean up loose ends, walking straight into the Forge, finding Nimrod now incapacitated and part of the computer system, and having one last conversation with him. The darker version of the Seventh Doctor is in full effect here, with no companion to hold him back. He blames that part of his persona on Nimrod and what happened to Cassie, which may or may not be accurate. Beth Chalmers provides the narration, and although her Scots accent is a bit over the top (it sounds a lot like Sophie Aldred’s version), she manages to do a good job with what’s essentially a two-handed conversation, where each line is laced with menace. If you cared about the Forge (and some folks at Big Finish clearly did), this is a decent wrap-up.
