This special release came out in 2009, when Charley was traveling with the Sixth Doctor. The Krotons hadn’t been seen at all, really, since the Second Doctor episode “The Krotons.” Unfortunately, because the story is only an hour, it feels like a full-length story with parts of the plot cut out. The Krotons don’t get a lot of development at all; they’re just a generic threat. There’s the usual trope of scientists messing with things they shouldn’t, and a tyrannical leader motivated only by profit, but all of that is taken as read and disposed of almost immediately; the Doctor never even meets them. Unfortunately, the resolution is fairly predictable as well. At least Charley gets to make a “croutons” joke, which has been in my head for decades. As for Charley, once again her secret is confined to just a few hints that the Doctor makes note of. On the whole, pretty throwaway.
