The Eleven #3

After the events of the last story, the Eleven is now the ruler of Molaruss, because the residents think that having eleven minds is terribly nifty and efficient, and for his part, the Eleven seems to be trying to do a good job for once. How he’s keeping the more insane personas in line isn’t exactly clear, but probably has something to do with the therapy methods on Molaruss. The Doctor and Constance return, about five years later in the Molaruss timeline, but an undefined “while” in the Doctor’s. It turns out that the Eleven has summoned them back because he’s enacted a plan to give the rest of the population eleven personas, like himself, and wants the Doctor as witness. There’s no grand scheme or nefarious plan; he’s just bored with being the ruler now and thinks this will make the people more interesting. This scheme affects Constance as well, so we get to see aspects of her personality. There’s something of a plot thread there, as Constance is upset and frightened at first, but eventually comes to an accommodation with them. Unfortunately, the story is too short to really explore that aspect. The climax is fairly typical, with a villain who over-reaches rather than the Doctor doing something clever. On the whole, the boxed set is well-named, because it’s really the Eleven’s story, without the Doctor doing much at all. Which is OK for a one-time thing, but he doesn’t have the interest to pull off a series like the War Master. On the whole, the set is OK, not great.
