Constance’s next trilogy begins with a story bearing one of the most impressive covers Big Finish has ever produced: a stained-glass Dalek. That gives the impression of Daleks invading a medieval monastery, which is in fact what happens, but it’s a medieval monastery on an alien world, which hasn’t had first contact yet. Unlike the last story, this one has a bit of a classic-series feel to it, with various combinations of the good guys running around corridors, finding secret passages, captures, escapes, and recombining again. The Daleks are mostly on the back foot the whole time, which is different than their usual implacable take, but this batch are also more psychic than your usual Daleks, which makes them a bit more insidious. The monks are very like traditional European monks, which seems like a bit of a waste of an alien planet, but it’s got all the monastic cliches in there. The story is written by Mike Tucker, who was an effects designer at the end of the classic series, and designed the first Dalek for the new series, so you can certainly say the man knows his Daleks. Constance is pretty consistent in this story, being capable and even a bit more outspoken than previously. It’s a decent story of Daleks in different circumstances.
