The End of the Line

The Last Adventure

The Last Adventure #1

Released: 17 August 2015

This episode is a slightly unusual insert. It’s actually the first story recorded with Constance, and the first to be released as well, so for many fans, this was the first time they heard her. It takes place here in the timeline, though, because she’s been traveling with the Doctor for a while. Constance seems a bit different in this story; her RP accent isn’t quite as pronounced, and she’s somewhat snarkier with the Doctor. She’s still capable and take-charge, though, which is useful. The episode is almost a play on “Midnight” from the Tenth Doctor’s era, in that it features a bunch of frightened people stuck on a train that’s lost in a fog. However, there’s some serious timey-wimey going on with colliding parallel dimensions. The Master is the baddie in this story, but using one of his typical disguises, and a clever workaround to use the Anthony Ainley Master without Anthony Ainley. And because this is the Last Adventure, the Valeyard is here too, but because it’s the first story, he’s well in the background. The fact that it’s out of order for the Doctor doesn’t affect the story at all, which is well done. I think this is the most creative of the Last Adventure stories, even though it’s short.
