A Town Called Fortune

Companion Chronicles #5.5
Released: 4 November 2010

This story is the only Companion Chronicle with Evelyn, and one of the rare ones to feature a Big Finish-created companion. Which makes it somewhat unusual, because we haven’t heard Evelyn as narrator before. It’s also a western, meaning that she has to play a couple of characters with American accents, and it has to be said, does a very good job. Her portrayal of the Doctor isn’t really an imitation, but captures some of his tone and cadence, which is pretty normal for Companion Chronicles. Richard Cordery, who plays the male characters apart from the Doctor, sounds a little stereotypical, even though he’s spent some time in America. The plot itself is pretty twisty, and hinges a lot on deception, and Eveylyn’s research skills to see through that, which is good. Oddly, it’s not told as a flashback to long ago, but as a flashback to the story as it’s ending, which means the frame story actually ends the main plot. Doctor Who has never done particularly well with westerns, but this one is reasonable.
