This Short Trip is the first Evelyn story released since Maggie Stables’ death, read by Stephen Critchlow, who as usual manages to capture the characters’ tone, if not their exact voices. Evelyn is already a prisoner when the story opens, bragging to her captor about her imminent rescue by the Doctor, whose skills and daring she praises highly. This is intercut with scenes of the Doctor bumbling his way through the rescue, succeeding mostly through dumb luck. It’s a funny story overall, and reflects Evelyn’s tendency to appear confident and glib even when she had no reason to.
