This one is supposed to be dark, spooky, and maybe just a bit mystical, but it doesn’t quite succeed. The TARDIS lands in the future, on a spaceship at the edge of the solar system, where there’s a strange door that sucks people in. The Doctor spends most of the story being ignorant, and complaining about what he doesn’t know. It’s a standard-length story, but it feels over-long and padded, with long stretches of the characters talking through what they don’t know, and a full-episode detour to 1952 that doesn’t seem to accomplish much. Special credit goes to Martha Cope (who played the Controller in “Bad Wolf” on TV) for playing a military commander under a lot of pressure, struggling to do the right thing when she’s been tossed into a mysterious Doctor Who episode, and has no idea what the right thing is.
