This is another Interlude, an hour-long story told in narrated form, this time by Toby Hadoke. Toby, as usual, doesn’t do impersonations, but he captures the Sixth Doctor’s speech mannerisms quite well. This time, they’re not on a water world; it’s a planet entirely inhabited by fungus. Except it’s not boring, because there’s a human military research outpost here too. And of course people are dying. Because of its short length, there’s less of the “authority figures don’t trust the Doctor and toss him in a cell” than usual, although there’s still some. And credit to writer Stephen Christopher in his first Big Finish story, it’s not easy to figure out what’s really going on, and who’s on which side. And given that one of the sides is mind-controlling mushrooms, that’s not bad. Mel’s programming skills are used for once, and Hebe acknowledges that her specialty isn’t all that useful here, although she helps. On the whole, it’s a pretty decent story.
