This is the first of the Lost Stories to take place in history, this time in London, probably 1592, as there’s plague and the theaters are closed. It’s too early for Shakespeare, so the Doctor and Peri run into Christopher Marlowe, who’s in the middle of writing Doctor Faustus, and actively seeking out sources of “other powers.” In this case, he meets up with what appears to be a skeletal Spaniard. There’s a lot of running around, and a brief detour to the Astral Plane, but it ends up being another one of those cases of ancient, uber-powerful beings who’ve lost their home and want to take over the Earth, disguised as mysticism, so the Doctor does something to stop them that looks mystical, but he claims is science. The highlight is probably Peri impersonating Queen Elizabeth, with Nicola Bryant doing a credible job of sounding like an American trying to sound like the queen. I wish I liked this one more, as it’s the only historical in the bunch, and it’s by Barbara Clegg, who wrote “Enlightenment,” but it’s just kind of flat.
