You didn’t think they would do a Sixth Doctor and Peri boxed set and not invite Nev Fountain, did you? Of course not. And of course it has crazy concepts and a twisty story. The Doctor and Peri’s relationship finally comes to a crossroads, so they seek out therapy from a space station full of robotic Sigmund Freuds, which makes as much sense as anything else. This story does finally raise the question of just why Peri stays with the Doctor, even if it doesn’t quite answer. As usual in a Nev Fountain story, Peri has a lot of agency and strength, and gets quite a few zingers in dialog. As is also fairly common in a Nev Fountain story, nothing is exactly what it seems, and at least for me, it started to come together shortly before the story explained it, which is the sweet spot for that kind of revelation. The story has an ending, but there’s no grand conclusion to Peri’s story, although I didn’t expect one. I imagine Big Finish is setting up to have this pair continue for quite some time, but for now, this is the only boxed set with them.
