This is another one of the Five-Six-Seven trilogies, meaning this is the middle section, and again, it’s probably best listened to as a set, but this project doesn’t work that way. It depends a lot on the events of the previous episode (“The Burning Prince”), but everything seems to have gone wrong from there. The Doctor was supposed to watch over the empress, but he doesn’t show up until 30 years after he left (not entirely his fault). The Prince from the first episode is back, and he’s thoroughly nasty this time around, although he also has his reasons. It’s not the same actor, and honestly James Wilby does menacing well, but doesn’t really convey any other emotions. A bunch of secondary characters get killed, somewhat uselessly. And the Doctor ends up reprogramming a bunch of monsters with his own sense of justice; there’s no way that’ll go wrong. This should be one of those interesting trilogies, but honestly it’s all rather bland.
