This story finds the Doctor with a previously unmentioned companion, Mathew Sharpe, a pilot from the year 2715 who doesn’t appreciate Monty Python. If this chronology is correct, Mathew is the Doctor’s first companion since Peri, and he kind of fits the role. He’s mostly bland, although he does have a tendency to get chirpy under stress, which mostly just gets him shouted at. The Doctor is still fairly arrogant at this stage, not really paying much attention to his companion’s wants. There’s also an interior designer who’s a gaseous being, and squid in exo-suits who apologize while they’re murdering you. Most of the story seems like a typical “base under siege” story, though, until it takes a very abrupt turn in Part 4. It would be terrible to say more than that, so I’ll just leave it that this is a decently memorable story.
