This second boxed set aims for a more “ordinary” pace, as much as the Time War has such a thing. The box is called “Infernal Devices,” which we know there were a lot of in the Time War, and we know from “Day of the Doctor” that the Doctor has strong opinions about a lot of these devices, and who should be able to use them. In this first story, by John Dorney, we actually get two: the boringly named Annihilator, which erases species from time retroactively, but also some rather nasty resurrection technology. Time Lords are always doing the resurrection thing during the war, but this one is particularly nasty, as it involves partnering up with some “technomancers” from the dawn of time who worship the sort of demon-things that the Seventh Doctor would regularly stomp upon. The story doesn’t really have the usual John Dorney twistiness, but it does have David Warner playing an evil wizard, and that’s pretty hard to beat. Plus the Doctor spends more time being appalled than tired this time around, so John Hurt gets to shout in shock and outrage more than he did last time. It’s not necessarily the strongest story, but it’s not bad.
