With this third part, we get to see what happened before Parts 1 and 2. Is the story enhanced by doing it in this order? Possibly. Case is more in control of herself and her abilities here, before she suffers memory damage. Veklin seems to be more on board with the Doctor’s plan, or at least not nearly as angry with him. And Albert…well, Albert isn’t in the other two stories, which means the listener moves through the story with an increasing sense of dread. We find out why the planet is under threat, and how they got back 24 hours before the start of the story. What we don’t find out is why the planet is such a threat to the universe. It seems like it’s just a random planet that happened to be in the way, so that part doesn’t really add up. By the end, the Doctor is starting to rethink his methods, and maybe he’s a bit too casual about the amount of death around him. I could have used some more introspection there, but he seems to be accepting that he’s the Doctor who doesn’t get it right, the one who’s not good enough. Which should be sadder than it’s played, but we’ll have to see where it goes from here.
